Heightened state of vigilance and arousal that involves constantly looking for danger and threat. It is more than hyper-arousal, it is an overwhelmed monotropic person desperately looking for a hook into a monotropic flow-state.

What changes this

Removing the threat, not the vigilance. Meerkat mode is an accurate reading of an unsafe room. It stops when the room is safe, and telling somebody to calm down inside it is asking them to stop perceiving correctly.
